On the Gen 2 F-150 Raptor's 3.5L High-Output EcoBoost, this shows up as a loud metallic rattle for the first several seconds after you turn the key, and it goes away once the engine has run for a moment. Which model years and which engine

This is a 3.5L High-Output EcoBoost problem, full stop. It shows up across the entire Gen 2 F-150 Raptor run, 2017 through 2020, and it is worse on the earlier trucks. 2017-2018 Raptors ran the first version of the phaser and timing set, and they are the ones you hear about most in owner forums and at dealer service counters. 2019-2020 trucks got the Live Valve suspension and Trail Control, not a redesigned front timing cover, so the rattle is still there. It shows up a little less often and often a little later in the mileage curve, but it is the same failure mode.

Phaser rattle versus everything else that sounds like it

A cold 3.5 EcoBoost makes more than one kind of noise, and shops mix these up constantly. Here is how to tell them apart from the driver's seat.

Cam phaser rattle sounds like a loud, mechanical marble-shake or diesel-clatter from the front-center of the engine, right where the timing cover sits. It is loudest in the first 3-8 seconds of a stone-cold start (overnight cold, not "sat for an hour") and it fades as oil pressure builds. It does not come back once the engine is warm, even after you shut it off and restart within the hour.

Turbo wastegate rattle is a lighter, tinnier chatter that you hear at idle or light throttle, not just on cold start. It tracks with the turbos, not the front of the block, and it can show up warm or cold. This is a separate, well-known Gen 2 issue on its own, and it is a cheaper fix, typically one wastegate actuator at a time.

Timing chain slap sounds similar to phaser rattle but tends to run longer and get worse over time rather than disappearing consistently after a few seconds. If the "phaser rattle" has started lasting 15-20 seconds or is showing up on a warm restart too, the chain and guides are probably already wearing from the phaser problem, not a separate issue.

Exhaust tick or manifold noise is a tapping or ticking, not a rattle, and it is more of a Gen 1 6.2L V8 exhaust-stud complaint than a Gen 2 EcoBoost one. If you hear a tick that gets quieter as things heat up rather than disappearing outright, have a shop check the exhaust manifold hardware before they touch anything at the front of the engine.

If you are not sure which one you are hearing, record it on your phone the next cold start and play it for a shop before they diagnose off your description alone. This is the single most common way an independent shop misquotes this job.

What Ford covers and what it does not

Ford's published TSB on this problem describes the diagnosis and repair procedure, phaser replacement, updated tensioners, chain and guides, and a PCM (powertrain control module) reflash. A TSB is not free work and it is not a recall. It is Ford telling dealer technicians how to fix a known issue correctly. Whether you pay for it depends entirely on where the truck sits on its warranty clock.

The Gen 2 Raptor carries Ford's standard 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, and the phaser and timing components are powertrain parts. If the rattle shows up inside that window, this repair is covered, no argument. Outside that window, the TSB tells the dealer exactly what to do, but you are the one paying for it unless the dealer's service manager grants goodwill, which is a discretionary courtesy Ford extends case by case, usually tied to how close you are to the warranty cutoff and your service history at that store.

The rattle by itself, heard only in the first few seconds of a cold start, is not an emergency. Plenty of Gen 2 owners have run trucks for a year or more past when they first noticed it. But the phaser vanes are physically hammering against their stops every time that rattle happens, and that wear does not stop or reverse. Left alone, the next stage is the timing chain and guides wearing from the same slack and impact, which turns a phaser job into a phaser-plus-chain-plus-guide job, which is exactly the same repair scope as fixing it right the first time, just done later and often with more collateral wear on tensioner shoes and guide plastic.
